Lookout Site Regions: Origin Site ~ Central WA, Re-Lo Site ~ Central WA
The move of an L-4 cab from Lion Rock to become the existing Sugar Loaf Mountain Lookout is a good example of a Type 3 Re-Location. Lion Rock, the Origin Site for this move, and Sugar Loaf Mountain, the Re-Location site, were both established early and both have had three generations of lookouts. The last Lion Rock Lookout was destroyed in 1967. The Sugarloaf Mountain is still there and is staffed each fire season. It is on the SLOW93 list.
The description for the Lion Rock Lookout in Rex’s Forest Fire Lookout Page includes in part: “Established as a camp with crow’s nest tree platform in the 1920’s, a 40′ pole L-4 tower was built in 1932. Then a new 40′ treated timber L-4 tower was constructed in 1948, and destroyed in 1967”. The Sugarloaf Mountain Lookout description includes: “First used for fire detection in 1914, Sugarloaf has had a long history. The first station was a camp. In 1924, a D-6 cupola cabin was added. This was replaced in 1949 with the present L-4 cab, which was moved from Lion Rock, where it had been built in 1932.”
